Video Director - Live

for Corporate and Show Events

What happens in the video control room?

A Live Video Director is responsible for the visual outcome of an event. All camera signals are fed into the video mixer. It determines which image is sent out.

This output refers to various possible sources. In a classic scenario, such as at a convention or concert, it could be a projection screen behind or next to the stage. The image is displayed on it using a projector or an LED wall.

The video can also be sent to a broadcast van or livestream.

What's my job as a Video Director?

Ultimately, I am the guy who is in charge of the right picture in the right moment. I need to decides consistently what to show and what not to show which people, subjects, specific details, or even a wide shot that captures the entire scene.

To help me navigate this, I often have a production plan to refer to, although it’s not uncommon for unexpected events to have to be incorporated as well.

Audience reactions, for example, are popular side events that tend to be incorporated spontaneously. Of course, unexpected things happen on stage as well, and it’s important to capture them if they serve the context or enhance the entertainment.

On my multiviewer screen, I can therefore see all the cameras at the same time and decide at any moment which image best reflects the current situation or offers the viewer the most variety.

To adjust the camera angles accordingly, I’m in constant communication with all the camera operators. I give them verbal cues e.g. when they’re in the preview [green frame] a "Ready" and a “Take” when their signal is sent to the “program” [red frame].

Why live events?

As a German certified event technician, my background is in lighting. In addition to concerts and festivals, I've also worked extensively in the field of corporate events and conferences.

I believe this foundation has given me, for over 25 years now, a pretty good understanding of what happens on stage and around it, and which parts of it should be shown.

Whether CEO or Pop Star - I'll take them all...

...just how they are.

Thanks to my experience in and around boardrooms, as well as behind the scenes with well-known artists, I believe I have developed a very neutral and professional approach to my work.

I am friendly, respectful, and direct in my interactions and conversations.

Focus and professionalism under often quite extreme conditions - long periods of concentration, combined with unfamiliar work environments and schedules - make this industry not only exciting and thrilling, but also quite demanding.

That's exactly what makes this work so special to me.

Fantastic colleagues like David Luchow, pictured here, bring not only an international perspective but also this fascinating passion and precision, which not only motivates us but is also just good fun.
